What to do when: Your child won’t sit in a highchair during mealtimes

It’s very common for toddlers to refuse to sit in their highchair at some stage. As they grow, their desire for independence increases, and they often prefer to play, explore, or be outdoors rather than sit still.

Eli went through a phase of refusing his highchair. He would cry and do that classic toddler move—arching his back so carrying him felt impossible 😂 It was stressful and frustrating, and I’ll admit I gave in a few times and let him “eat on the go” because I just wanted him to eat.

If you’re in this situation, you’re not alone. Here are some tips that may help:

  • Avoid distractions (e.g. TV)

  • Tidy toys away before mealtimes

  • Eat together as a family—children often eat better when it’s a shared experience

  • Make mealtimes fun (e.g. themed plates or colourful cutlery)

  • Limit daytime snacks, as these can affect appetite at meals

  • Involve your child in meal preparation—they may be more willing to try food they helped make

  • Serve at least one familiar or preferred food alongside new options

  • Offer praise and positive reinforcement

  • Set clear boundaries (e.g. food stays at the table, no eating while playing)

  • Keep mealtimes short and relaxed (around 20–30 minutes works well)

  • Play calm music (we like Disney classical—our go-to Spotify playlist)

  • Make sure the highchair is comfortable (we use a padded one)
